Thanksgiving Recipes for Kids

If you hope to be a hit at the kids’ table this Thanksgiving holiday, try these kid tested and approved Thanksgiving recipes for kids to increase the odds of clean plates and lots of smiles.

Neapolitan ice cream scooped mashed potatoes

neapolitan mashed potatoesThis recipe calls for three different versions of mashed potatoes.

For “chocolate” potatoes:

  • 3 white potatoes, peeled, cubed and boiled in water until tender (about 20 minutes)
  • 3 T milk
  • 2 T sour cream
  • 1 tsp. hot chocolate mix

Mix ingredients together until to a consistency that is thick enough to be scooped with an ice cream scoop.

For “vanilla” potatoes:

  • Use the same ingredients minus the hot chocolate mix adding a little extra sour cream or milk as needed for thickness.

For “strawberry” potatoes:

  • 6 red potatoes, peeled, cubed and boiled in water until tender (about 20 minutes)
  • 3 T milk
  • 2 T sour cream
  • A few drops of red food coloring

Mix ingredients together until to a consistency that is thick enough to be scooped with an ice cream scoop.

These make a colorful side dish that kids of all ages will love!

Baked Apple Pear Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups peeled and cored pears, cut into ½” – 1” pieces
  • 5 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into ½” – 1” pieces
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup quick cooking oats
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place sliced apples in a 9″ X 13″ baking pan. Mix sugar, the tablespoon of flour and spices together and then sprinkle over the apples. Pour water over the mixture and combine remaining ingredients and crumble evenly over the apples.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 to 60 minutes. Test to be sure the apples and pears are soft. If not, bake for 5-10 minutes longer until they’re tender.

Turkey appetizers

Turn healthy food into a cute little turkey!

Ingredients:

  • Pumpkin bread or muffin
  • Carrots
  • Seedless red grapes
  • Seedless green grapes
  • Small slices of an apple cut into eyes and the turkey wattle

Cut a round slice of pumpkin bread (or muffin) for the turkey body. Cut the carrots into lengthwise slices for the turkey’s feathers and legs. Cut the end from a red grape and use a large piece for the turkey’s head. Using a thin apple slice cut out two little eyes and the wattle. Stick the eyes onto the turkey’s head (the moistness helps them stick). Arrange on a plate – kids are sure to appreciate these your effort and these special Thanksgiving recipes for kids!
