There are many simple recipes to make with kids that allow children to get creative in a way that is fun for everyone.
Yogurt Parfait
A variety of healthy delicious ingredients can be used in a yogurt parfait. Start with a tall, clear glass and let the kids get creative.
You can use a sweetened flavored yogurt (vanilla is good) or try using plain yogurt mashed with banana. This makes an even healthier snack without the added sugar. Layer spoonfuls of yogurt with fruit, granola, nuts and other fun foods – let the kids decide!
Smoothies
Smoothies are always fun and easy – with a variety of fruit that can be used kids can come up with their own special creation and even name it themselves. Using one medium ripe banana and about two cups soy milk as a base, add various types of frozen fruit to the mix and blend until smooth. Mango/pineapple and peach/raspberry are just two favorite combinations that can be used to create a healthy, yummy treat.
Mini-turkey burgers
Turkey burger is leaner than regular ground beef, and kids love seasoning and shaping the meat into miniature patty shapes.
Season one pound of turkey burger with salt, pepper, one egg, and a little ketchup (add a packet of meatloaf seasoning for extra sizzle) – mix together and form into patties. Mom or dad can grill the meat. When it’s ready, place the patties on mini-sized buns with pickle slices, cheese and other condiments.
Baked tortilla chips
Baked tortilla chips make for yet another of the most fun and easy recipes to make with kids. Tortillas can be cut into a variety of shapes and can be seasoned in many different ways.
All you need is eight 6” tortillas, non-stick cooking spray, seasonings of your choice and a large freezer bag. Parmesan cheese and garlic, lemon and herb or cinnamon and sugar are just a few of the delicious combinations that can be made.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line the tortillas onto a baking sheet. Spray both sides of the tortillas with cooking spray. Cut the tortillas into chip sizes and place the seasonings into the freezer bag. Mix the spices well and add the tortillas to the bag. Seal and gently shake until chips are coated, and place on the baking sheet. Give them another light coating of cooking spray and put them into the oven, baking for 10 minutes. Rotate the chips and return to the oven for another 5 to 8 minutes or until crispy.
