Easy and Healthy Lunch Ideas for KidsPosted: June 22, 2012
Kids really enjoy foods that taste good and are fun to eat. Kids have this misconception that healthy food tastes bad. That is so far from the truth. Just like adults, kids eat with their eyes first. They will eat healthy lunches if they look fun and are fun to eat. There are a lot of great healthy lunches for kids that only take minutes to prepare.
A great idea for healthy lunches for kids is to make up a little salad bar. If they can put their own salad together they are more likely to eat it and like it. Kids are very hands on, anything that they can put together or make themselves, they will eat. Have some fresh greens, cheese, a lean lunch meat like turkey breast or lean baked ham, a variety of fresh, raw vegetables and a healthy dressing. They will have fun making their own lunch.
Another thing that can be done for healthy lunches is to let them make their own mini pizza. Try not to have pepperoni or processed meats as an option. Instead, offer chicken breast or steak for the meat choices. Use whole cheeses and fresh, raw vegetables. The pizza would have to have a rule though, make sure they choose at least two vegetables to add to their pizza. Instead of using jarred pizza sauce, make up your own quick sauce. All that you need is a can of crushed tomatoes or tomato puree, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, dry parsley, dry oregano, salt and pepper. You’ll need about a teaspoon of each seasoning and herb to one 15 ounce can of crushed tomatoes or tomato puree. Premade pizza crusts are available in whole wheat options, this helps to keep it in the family of healthy lunches for kids while still making it look like junk food to them.
With these two great ideas for healthy lunches for kids, you are sure to find a way to please them at lunchtime. It is surprising how healthy a child will choose to eat if they can make their own choices. This also gives them the option to be creative, try new things and feel important at the same time. Creating healthy lunches can be a fun activity and make children look forward to lunchtime more. They won’t fight you over what’s for lunch if they make the decisions.
